I was about 8 years old, and me and my mom were at an airport in Tampico ready to fly back home to Guadalajara from visiting my grandmother. Little did I know that I was in for quite a ride, thus my fascination with airplanes grew.
As I steped in the plane, I turned my head to my left to try to catch a glimpse of the cockpit. And I did, and I was amazed. It definitely got me wanting to see more. Luckily, I got my way. And boy did I saw way more than I expected.
As we sat in our assigned seats and got settled, I turned to my mom and told her that I wanted to go over the cockpit so I could check it out, or something to that effect. You would think that your typical parent would have totally ignored that request coming from an 8 year old, but not my mom she didn’t. Instead, she told me she would ask the flight attendant to see what could be done.
The next thing I remember happening, is that the lovely flight attendant was walking me towards the cockpit so I could see it from the inside. From what I recall, this cockpit was not the small, tight ones you usually see. This one had more room to it.
I was the happiest kid right then, but I was about to get a whole lot happier. As I walked in the cockpit, the captain greeted me. After that, everything is pretty much a blurr, except I could never forget the words that came out from the captain’s mouth himself:
“Would you like to stay in the cockpit during take off?”
I am surprised I didn’t shit my pants at that moment. Of course I said yes, and then the flight attendant unfolded a seat that was attached to the wall. I sat down, put on my seat-belt, and was ready for the time of my life. By that time, my mom was being told by the flight attendant about my little adventure.
It was rainy that night. All I heard was the captain and co-captain talking to the control tower as they were getting ready to take off. I felt the plane picking up speed and then it took off to a dark, rainy sky. As it happened, the feeling was amazing. Aside from water drops, nothing could be seen from the cockpit windows. I remember wondering how they could manage to do anything from zero visibility. After a little while, the flight attendant came in so she could take me back to my seat, but before that, the captain turned to me and gave me a gold, wing-shaped pin.
It was funny how as I walked back to my seat, everyone was staring at me, probably wondering how I managed to “hang out” in the cockpit during take off. It was just a great experience!
